Asics Gel Nimbus' sole unit is provided with soft cushioning that has helped the shoe gain much popularity. This cushioning system makes use of Asics' Gel technology. This is made of goblets of silicon based Gel material that is inserted into the midsole of the shoe both on its heel and forefoot. Another feature that adds up to Asics Gel Nimbus cushioning would be its Solyte material. This is a type of foam that is found in the shoe midsoles. Although it is a very lightweight material, the Solyte foam provides the shoe with a huge amount of cushioning.

A unique characteristic of the Asics Gel Nimbus is that it blends it cushioning materials with a couple of guidance and support features. This has been purposely done by Asics since a pair of shoes with too much cushioning and no support can cause improper running gait. To prevent this from happening, the base of the Asics Gel Nimbus is designed with wider form; thus, allowing it to offer more stability. On the other hand, the heel of the shoe provides forth a sufficient amount of shock absorption. This is one of the gender-specific designs featured on the Asics Gel Nimbus. For the female version, the heel of the shoe is made to be 3 mm higher to help relieve stress on the Achilles tendon.

Another strong feature of the Asics Gel Nimbus is the Space Trusstic System. This is basically a transition bridge that is made from a plastic shank that wraps around the midsole of the shoe underneath the arch. This provides the shoe with torsional stability between the shoe's heel and forefoot. As a result, unnatural twisting of the foot is prevented. In contrast to other technologies utilized in different running shoes, the Space Trusstic System only takes all of the area underneath the arch of the midsole and is made from a solid plastic compound. This feature is specifically designed in two separate versions to cater to the needs of both men and women. The Space Trusstic System is supported by the Guidance Line. This is basically a vertical flex groove that extends from the heel to the toe. This guides the foot when running.

The Nimbus makes use of shoelaces mounted on a curved line to follow the natural shape of the bones of the feet. This allows the shoes to lock more properly around the runner's feet.
